Port Safe in Harbour against Sukhothai

Now during my time in this part of the world made it challenging to watch football as Chinese New Year was looming. So when I saw that there was a game tonight at PAT Stadium in Bangkok, I simply could not refuse and had to make it my mission to make my way down and see some Thai League 1 football. Admittedly I took a Bolt as I was not going to make my way via public transport and it would have taken me too long to navigate my way though peak hour Bangkok commuter after work evening traffic. However, I made it and just in the nick of time as kick off began 5 minutes prior to my arrival. One would argue that I was... punctual.

I was a little lost initially as the stadium does not have an obvious entrance. But you navigate your way through the food, beverage and merchandise stalls and then you go to the ticketing booths and then you walk to these gates and then you are in the ground. While initially confusing, it all made perfect sense and was rather simple.

Tickets were straight forward enough to pick up at the ground and, like much of football in Thailand, refreshingly affordable. A seat in a decent section came in around 150–200 baht (roughly $6–8 AUD), which still feels like remarkable value for a top-flight game.

Inside, the ground does what it does best. Compact, steep, and close. You’re never far from the pitch, and the noise carries well without ever feeling overwhelming. One end keeps up a steady rhythm with drums and chants, giving the match a constant background rather than bursts of intensity. Both ends of the ground you had Port FC's supporters making their presence known and were constantly beating their drums, singing and jumping. Quintessential football, love it.

I will do this a bit differently and talk about the food and drink intermingled with the match, rather than talk about the game and then the food in a separate manner. Food isn’t an afterthought here—it’s part of the experience as you are forced to make these considerations as you walk up to the ground passing the vendors and stalls. Grilled chicken skewers were going for about 20–30 baht each, pork skewers slightly more at 30–40 baht, and a decent portion of fried rice or noodles sat around the 50–60 baht mark. Cold drinks—water or soft drink—were typically 20–30 baht, while a local beer came in at roughly 60–80 baht. Cheap enough that you don’t hesitate, and good enough that you probably go back for another round before kickoff. The beer were well proportioned and I did sit on one as it was a half litre can in the plastic cup.

Kick-off came and, almost immediately, the game settled into a pattern that never really shifted. Port FC were in control from the outset—calm, composed, and dictating everything. It wasn’t frantic or overwhelming, just constant.

Sukhothai FC looked like a side preparing for a long night. Their structure held in patches, but it always felt like they were reacting rather than shaping anything themselves. The opening goal felt inevitable. Port had been moving the ball patiently, stretching the pitch, waiting for the gap—and when it came, the finish was straightforward. It barely changed the mood; it simply confirmed it.

What followed defined the match. Port kept coming. Chances built steadily—some half chances, others much clearer—but the scoreline didn’t move as quickly as it might have. At times it was wasteful finishing; at others, it was Sukhothai producing last-ditch, almost frantic defending. Blocks thrown in, clearances hacked away, moments where it felt easier to score than miss—yet somehow the ball stayed out.

At halftime, 1–0 felt light. Port could have put more away but were just unlucky to not get their lines right, the right man at the right time, or some last gasp defense from the visitors. The second half followed the same script, only with more space. Sukhothai pushed forward a little, but that just made things easier for Port. The second goal eventually arrived, and it felt overdue rather than decisive. From there, it became a question of how many—but the answer never quite stretched as far as it might have. Port continued to dominate, continued to create, but either the finishing let them down or Sukhothai found another desperate intervention. The third goal, arriving late, felt like a correction rather than an addition.

The crowd never seemed frustrated. There was an understanding of the control, an appreciation of the way Port FC dictated the match from start to finish, even if the scoreboard didn’t fully reflect it. Walking back out into the Bangkok night, past the last of the food stalls still serving skewers and drinks at the same easy prices, the feeling was straightforward enough. 3–0 was comfortable—but it could easily have been more.

Was a great football experience, my first since I was here to watch  Australia play Thailand to a highly frustrating 2-2 draw in world cup qualifying back in 2016. Great memories flood back when I was sitting in the stands and watching this game. However, new ones have been made and would love to come back and watch more Thai football. The country is just such a lovely place, I do not know why I do not spend more time here when I do visit. Not doing it enough justice. Hopefully a future return, but all in all a wonderful night watching some Thai football as i make my way back home walking back and then a few trains back.
