Australia Wasteful Against Peru

The third and final match for both teams in their group C phase at the world cup in the summer seaside resort city of Sochi. Sochi was the host for the 2014 winter Olympic games and the match was played in the Olympic stadium. The scene was once again set in the stunningly beautiful summer that Russia has to offer, but this time it is a rather more beach-side feel to it. It was a rather warm day, which gave a very Australian/South American summer feel, with crystal blue skies, equally matched with a beautiful blue Black Sea rippling along like a blue carpet leading up to the stadium.

Like the other matches of the tournament, the fans and the city was buzzing with excitement. However, this time was slightly different. Different because there were so many Peruvian supporters who had made their way to Russia to support their nation. As they were so vast in number they had bought 80% of the tickets to the match. Leaving only a small portion of lucky Australian fans as well as locals making up the rest. In a stadium of 45,000; the men in yellow would only account for about 3,000. Leaving the rest of the stadium awash in a sea of white and red.

However, the match was all Australia with the Socceroos pushing deep into attack time and time again. The problem was that they just could not put the ball into the back of the net. There were multiple golden opportunities to open the scoring and confirm their dominance but the Australians were all sixes and sevens, becoming twisted and flustered. Peru had very few opportunities to strike, but when they did it was efficient and deadly. At half time it was 1-0 and full time finished at 2-0. While Australia were once again very valiant and determined being outgunned and outmatched compared to a far more talented and more composed South American unit, they were all over them. Just a recurring problem of Australia huffing and puffing but failing to blow the house down. Socceroo long time stalwart "Sir" Timothy Cahill made his final appearance for Australia late into the second half to try and inject some impetus. However, it was too late and Australia remained scoreless.

I had some hot-dogs and my usual coke, water and Budweiser. Coke and water were 200 rubles, Budweiser was 300 and the hot-dogs were 250. The hot-dogs were just plain style american with nothing overly exciting, nor disappointing about them.
There ends Australia's world cup campaign for 2018, as well as Peru's. Peru finished 3rd on 3 points with Australia finishing last in the group with only 1 point. While Australia didn't disgrace themselves and played very well against expectations. However there were many chances that went wanting that could have put Australia in a better position that truly reflected their performance.

Australia Give Denmark A Run For Their Money

Australia were up against another European team in the form of Denmark, who are in a bit of good form running into this tournament after a bit of a lacklustre qualifying campaign which almost saw them not make it to Russia. This second world cup match for both teams in group c took place in a former closed Soviet city of Samara at the Samara Arena.
The conditions were perfect for football as the sun was shining bright, lovely and warm and very few clouds set the scene for a fantastic day. Once again the crowd was buzzing with excitement as a world cup brings the most deepest and most passionate emotions out of the most calmest and stone-faced person.

Denmark kicked off and the vast majority of the first 30 minutes of the match was all the Danes. Australia were pushed on the back foot and were holding on for dear life to keep it scoreless. However a chink in the armour was building and the men in red sniffed the opportunity to slot home the opening goal of the match to put them into a deserved lead. While the Australians were stunned and somewhat filthy about allowing a few moments of not concentrating cost them dearly, but the Aussies were not going to accept this and lay down.
Another penalty was earned from the Australians and they converted to square up the score to 1 all. However, Australia began to grow in confidence and were able to turn the tables and began to probe and push into their attacking half.

Unfortunately, the Socceroos were unable to find that elusive winner. Countless threatening probes down the flanks to then be saved by the Danish defence, or through exquisite saves from the keeper. The game ended in a draw, Denmark were happy with the result, so were the Australians but they should feel frustrated for letting this one slip away. Positive signs though for the team under their manager, sad that he will have to depart after the tournament.

Once again food and drink were the same as the previous game. I didn't have anything to eat as the queues were too long and just too slow. So I once again drank some coke, water and a few Budweiser. Coke and water were 200 rubles and the beer was 300. They also sell alcohol free beer, but honestly why would you want that?

Japan Upset Colombia

At every world cup there is bound to be an upset or two and this match was no exception to that. I ventured to the city of Saransk via train from Kazan to see this match. While I should have taken the approach of my friend to base myself in say Moscow or Saint Petersburg and then flown to the other cities, I wanted to try and fit in as much of the sights of the smaller cities as possible. Who knows, I might not return so I had to make these trips worth it. But each to their own, and I think that either way it worked out well for anyone who came here.

Today was yet again a lovely day with clear blue skies and very few clouds and bathed in lovely bright sunshine where the throngs of fans in yellow were swarming like bees to a hive entering the stadium to see Colombia take on Japan. Much like the Peru game in Sochi, this game was filled with virtually everyone from Colombia. I could hardly see any fans from Japan or locals. So this was one of those games where for some reason one team managed to practically buy all the tickets for the match.

As I've experienced so far the game at Saransk was no different to the other world cup games that I have been to during this tournament. Everyone was excited and buzzing amongst the sea of yellow with blues and reds speckled throughout that sea. It was a very party feeling in and around the stadium. The fans were expecting nothing less than a win, but things were about to go very differently for the South Americans.

From the outset it was a frantic match with both sides trying to find an instant opener to try and crack open their opposition. However within the first 10 minutes of this high tempo match, Colombia gave away a penalty and had a player sent off. Japan opened the scoring and just took control of the match from that moment onward. There were moments where Colombia looked dangerous and had Japan on the back foot. However, it did not last long as due to having the extra man were able to take control of each attacking push.

While the crowd was urging Colombia to try and find the equaliser, they struggled to mount a serious threat until the closing minutes of the first half when a lightening quick series of passes and a counter attack resulted in Colombia to pull the game square to head to the break at 1 all.

However this was not to last as they struggled to keep Japan at bay with being a man down so early really showing as it was all hands on deck when Japan probed for a second goal. This did eventuate with Japan breaking the deadlock in the 79th minute. Colombia afterwards just didn't look like that they were going to score an equaliser and ended in a historic victory for Japan. The first time in world cup history that an Asian team has beaten a South American team.

Once again nothing new or out of the ordinary for food and drink. Coke and water for 200 rubles and beer was 300.

С самого начала это было безумное совпадение с обеими сторонами, пытавшимися найти мгновенного открывателя, чтобы попытаться раскрыть свою оппозицию. France Just Too Strong Over Valiant Australia

My apologies as I have been very busy from travelling during the World Cup and throughout parts of Russia, as well as university and other commitments. But, here I am writing another edition of the Punctual Football Fan. However, on this occasion it is a 2018 World Cup edition. This time in the wonderful city of Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan. This wonderful city was host to Australia's and France's first world cup matches.
The atmosphere at the stadium was incredible. This is my first taste of a world cup and I was taken aback from the moment. People were abuzz and everyone were in good spirits. The weather was excellent, being a lovely bright, sunny and warm day with not a cloud in the sky set the stage for a wonderful day for football.

The pomp, pageantry and ceremony all taking place making it exciting to be there and be so proud of both teams making it through their respective qualification draws and soon going to run onto the park and get stuck in. It was a long and arduous process for Australia, but it was excellent that they made it to the tournament.

The match kicked off and France always looked threatening. This is of course understandable as they are a side brimming with super-stars who have been touted as hot favourites to win the world cup by the media pre tournament.
Australia were weathering the French storms having all hands on deck when they pushed for a probing attack. Australia under their Dutch manager seemed to be better composed under pressure than when they were under the command of their previous manager. Despite the sheer gulf in quality, Australia were able to keep the waves at bay.

But France finally broke through via a penalty, which upon further replay was not one. But it was awarded and we must live by the referee's decision. The slotted it home and opened the account for the campaign. It wasn't too long until Australia also won themselves a penalty. It was very tense but they too scored and for most of the match was 1-1.

Australia were frantically at times to maintain the status quo of the draw but a fortuitous strike from France in the 88th minute was heartbreak for the men in yellow and it hit the cross-bar and bounced over the line to seal the win for France. A shame, as Australia fought valiantly throughout the match but fell at the last hurdle.

Drinks were very good as it was 200 roubles for a water and or coke. Budweiser was the beer of choice for sponsorship reasons and that was 300 roubles. At the time 50 roubles was 1 Australian dollar. 60 to the US dollar, 70 for the Euro and 80 for the Pound roughly.

A fantastic day out in Kazan. The game was excellent, shame about the loss but I would take this over a 4-0 thumping any day. The people, food, drinks and sights of Kazan was awesome. I highly recommend coming here if you come to Russia.

Помпезность, зрелищность и церемония, все происходящие делают ее захватывающей, чтобы быть там, и так гордитесь тем, что обе команды делают это через свои квалификационные розыгрыши, и скоро отправятся в парк и застрянут. Это был долгий и трудный процесс для Австралия, но было отлично, что они попали на турнир.

Frantic Finish In Budapest

Witnessed my first international game in Europe as Hungary hosted Australia in a pre-cup friendly match on a wonderful June summers day in the Hungarian capital Budapest. Admittedly I was late as I caught the wrong trolley-bus and tram to get to the stadium. However, I made it and watched the end of the first half and the rest of the second half.

Australia were all over the Hungarians and even though this was the case, the Magyars were still threatening when they tried to probe into the Australian's defensive half. However some excellent keeping and some rather robust defending from the green and gold kept the hosts at bay. The second half though turned into a rather frantic and at times a comical affair with 2 own goals within 2 minutes of each other late in the half to give the Australians the win after the Hungarians drew level with the first own goal.

As I was rushed I had a beer and it was about 300 florint which is rather cheap. I don't recall what it was but while watching a game and in a rush, does it really matter? The stadium was fantastic and would love to see my home town stadium become a cosy, yet boisterous atmosphere. We will of course have to wait and see eventually. Getting to and from the stadium wasn't difficult either, you just need to remember where to go and what stops/numbers to take!
