Well I wanted to watch some football in the land of the rising sun however there was a slight problem. Japan was competing in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and therefore no J-League matches or right down to J-2 matches were not playing for the second half of June. What do I have to do with no football? Go to the nation's second favourite pass-time: Baseball.
The day of visiting Tokyo was almost called off as it was incredibly heavy with rain. Yet managed to brave it down to Tokyo Dome to watch Hawks take on the Fighters. Price of entry to nearly behind the catcher was 41 dollars so not bad compared to nib stadium or AFL games. The game was very entertaining going beyond the 9th innings. The atmosphere was terrific it was electric. The fan groups were at either end of the bleachers with drums, flags, chanting and bells (yes cowbells). It was odd but not because it felt completely like a football game yet what I was watching was clearly NOT football.
What was interesting was unlike baseball in the US it was well... Japanese, you have girls run up and down in packs slung over them politely yelling out if patrons want beer, icecreams, pepsi or other drinks and crisps.
Was so cute seeing them in pulled up socks, pleated skirts and tight shirts with hair tied back and a hat with a flower. When you look at them when you take your eye off the game and you see these brightly coloured outfits floating up and down the aisles so diligently and orderly yet so fast like watching the trains pull in and out at Tokyo Station.
The drinks were cheap at 3 dollars for a large cup or 300 yen. Icecream and crisps for about 2 dollars each which are good value. The bit that lets it all down were the beers. Yes its Kirin (either Kirin or Suntory) and we have had those drinks but (yes this sounds a bit rich) 10 dollars a pop for beer is a bit much. But when you have beers in Japan around 3 dollars for a 500ml can you could could feel ripped.
I highly recommend heading down to the baseball if you end up heading out this way. The more football feel made it more appealing shame it isnt the case in baseball or basketball in Australia.

Mega Combo Madness at Maguire Oval
Well decided to venture to Maguire Oval to see some football over there and While Caversham lost the match with the defenders falling asleep and a great free kick the whole point of me there was to try the food there.
Well you cannot go wrong with the combo selections. They have more than you can shake a stick at (why would you do that?) Well the combos are definitely cheap, incredibly cheap to be honest but i think it became a bit too thin on the ground.
What do you mean? Well the burger combo for a fiver was great value but the burger was incredibly oily and the bread dry and the cheese was a great addition but what ever happened to some good old fashioned lettuce and tomato or perhaps some pickles? The chips were nice and the crinkle cut style was a nice touch but if it wasnt for my dumping of chicken salt it may have been not so good.
Hot dog was nice too but again on the dry side with the bread. But the value of these combos saves this from being in what I call the "morley windmills zone" Then again Maguire has plenty to offer compared to Morley. all you need to do is sell a chocolate and you have done more than Morley.
Speaking of chocolates they have plenty there and for 50 cents what a buy, although they are fun size its great to cap off a combo meal with something sweet.
Plenty to offer with drinks and very good value.
Besides the burger not having vegies to give itself some freshness the price and combo idea gets a big thumbs up from the Punctual football fan. Guys if you live or are in the area head down and stop complaining Perth is dull.

Another Battle of Table Cloths - Gwelup croatia v Fremantle Croatia
Decided to go to the home of Gwelup Croatia after being informed by a few friends of the PFF that the food at Wishart street is something to get the mouth watering. So after picking up my other friend of mine at the station decided to take a look.
Besides finding the rather amusing spelling error on the sign of the Gwelup Croation House we walked round the front building to the ground. Small and compact venue surrounded by the development of Gwelup of the 1990's i was expecting something of a Morley Windmills standard so wasn't expecting much.
went to the canteen and was a very nice set up. The place was clean and the women there working at the canteen were fantastic. This is what a club is all about with their thankless task of providing tea, coffee, food and beers throughout the game without seeing a single minute of the game.
Bought a (I know it isnt Croation) Kransky hot dog with mustard and barbecue sauce and oh my this just simply melted in my mouth. What delight to have and Ozujsko to wash it down was just a nice way to finish this snack while watching a very entertaining match. The hot dog was 4 dollars and the beer was 4. The hot dog was a large size and the bread was fresh (IGA is across the road) so for 8 dollars was good value due to the quality of it all.
Gwelup running out winners 5-2 with a late goal for Fremantle. An amusing anecdote of the second half was watching an implosion of the Fremantle players bicker when a corner was taken for Gwelup and the next few minutes afterwards.
Was interesting to note that a certain FFA and FIFA referee Matthew Cheeseman was running the line for the game.
I have been informed by one of the PFF's sources that for a great meal head down to the Gwelup Croation House for a meal on Friday night for 20 dollars. Worth every dollar.
